Little Children
Echoes of “Madame Bovary” resonate through the American suburbs. Sarah finds herself in an unfulfilling marriage to an advertising executive, spending her long days at the park and pool with her young daughter, yearning for something more. Brad is an immature stay-at-home husband, married to a tough documentary filmmaker. Ronnie has just been released from prison – serving two years for indecent exposure to a minor – and lives with his elderly mother, May; Larry, a retired police officer, is intent on driving Ronnie away. Sarah and Brad find solace in each other’s company at the pool, a brief escape into adult interaction. Both Ronnie and Larry are haunted by their pasts. Brad ought to be preparing for the bar exam; Larry reminisces about his former job; Ronnie’s mother believes he should find a girlfriend. Sarah yearns to break free from her discontented existence. Where might these intertwined lives lead?
